Thanks Ian, I had removed all the carriage returns before the table
with no apparent effect, still lots of spurious line feeds. However,
encouraged by your hand-holding I've found a work around. This is
to strip all the carriage returns from the HTML between the table
tags. It seems that it was these carriage returns that produced the
unexpected line feeds before the table. All now works!
