Going into "super pedant mode", I have now measured the type height with elctronic digital callipers.

I only have steel vernier callipers, and my WH is 1948, so maybe less 'austerity' than yours, also printed by J&J Grey. My PM was printed by Alden, in 1948- although presumably, given the costs of type setting in those days, they were using the same blocks as in 1944.

My measurements will certainly be less precise than yours; I got a type height in WH of 5.4mm, and 4 lines (I used 4 lines because it will average out my errors) take up a height of 1.89cm.

The corresponding text height in PM is 5.5mm, and 4 lines take up 1.84cms.

Purely in a spirit of train spotting, how do those measurements compare with yours?

Reading the two books, PM doesn't feel more cramped than WH. But they are my two favourite books in the series, so I wasn't looking out for that.
