We only once camped with a cat- actually a kitten about the age of Sinbad. As I recall, my younger sister and I smuggled her aboard, and she was discovered too late to turn back. As Laurence says, and Sinbad demonstrated, she stayed quite close to our tent. (Luckily, this was a coyote-free area)

One 'hazard' that none of the Swallows, Amazons, and D's encounter is raccoons. They were a pretty frequent problem on our camping trips, as their hand-like paws can open cupboards or ice chests if they aren't locked up. They actually stole and ate my birthday cake one year. (Okay, it was really birthday Twinkies, but iced cakes are hard to find in the middle of a camping trip!)
