I've never really thought of Nancy as behaving in an EVIL way in the book. After all, she didn't know how soon the natives would be coming back to end their stay. The map was almost done and, while it was John's priority, there were other important things too! (Having a war, for instance!) Once she realised that John had been let down she went to quite good lengths to sort it out!
