Since he was coming from an anchored pilot vessel, not a pilot cutter like Sea Bear, I think he would have had to, wouldn't he?

Checked my (MacMillan) copy of GN last night; there's a reference on p. 31 to their having to rig the davits in order to lower the dinghy for CF and Nancy to take soundings around Sea Bear when they came into Scrubber's Cove in the fog. But I don't see any illustrations with the dinghy either on deck or trailed behind or alongside. In "Scrubbing Sea Bear", it's beached.
