Here in Canada, most people carry a loon or two around in their pockets, its on our dollar coin, known obviously as a loonie. In the past they were also on our $20 note.

Here in Ontario they are not uncommon on our lakes. Often cottage evenings are enlivened by their eerie calls. One of my fondest memories was swimming with my daughter and watching two adult loons feeding small fish to their half grown chicks not more than 20-30 feet away.
