Re speeding boats on Windermere: the previous (Conservative) government commissioned a study about speedboats on the lake. The Inspector admitted that he started out thinking there was no need for any change, but in his final report strongly recommended a 10 mph limit (whch would have ended waterskiing and other noisy practices). The Minister of the Environment ignored the recommendations. I wrote (as a member of Friends of the Lake District) to both PM John Major and the local (Conservative) MP and was told that jobs were more important than the environment.
The FLD have requested the current (Labour) government to revisit the proposal, and are optimistic that a speed limit will be imposed. I do not have any definite news as yet.
For those TARS keen to preserve unspoiled as much of the Lake District as possible, I strongly recommend FLD -- family membership is only 12 pounds (don't have documentation with me for other rates). Anyone interested email me and I'll provide addresses.
