Mike, couldnt agree with you more. In the mid-1950's we lived 10 minutes walk from Calderstones Park in Liverpool. From the age of 7 I (and the rest of the kids in the street) absolutely lived in the Park right through the school summer holidays, from 8:30 until dusk (except for a quick trip home for lunch with Mum).

AR Connection - a wonderful Boating lake, with TWO islands (which is still there, I believe: perhaps a current Liverpool resident can help?). We became unpaid, unofficial "boat men", helping the real council-employed "Boatmen" in exchange for free rowing boat trips. Not quite "the Lake in the North" but very special to us, and brought the S's & A's very close to me.
