Exactly--I think you put it better than I did. The geography we know is dependent on how the children perceive it. That is part of what makes AR's writing so strong--we as reader learn and add to our understanding through the eyes of the characters, allowing us to know these fictional beings intimately. We are behind their eyes, inside their brains. There are other authors who do this as well, and those are the books I always enjoy most thoroughly first time and will happily re-read.
