From my memory (I haven't got out any books to check) the Gaff on both Swallow and Amazon was attached to a traveller part way along, so that the gaff protruded past the mast.
The description in Rob's post talks about a Gaff ending in a set of jaws, so it could never go past the mast.
I am certainly no expert in rigging, but as an engineer, the above is logical to me.
Anyone care to comment ?
