At least one other person leaves that passage out when reading aloud John: I do. One of the many reasons I admire AR's writing is that he does not intrude his persona into the stories (that otherwise fine children's writer E Nesbit has the habit of interjecting moralistic asides).
A similar matter is that AR rarely anticipates action: the "Little did he know how significant this was to be"-type comment. His characters find things out when they find them out, with no presaging of the action. However, I recollect that there is at least one point where AR departs from this and DOES give an anticipatory comment. I cannot remember where it is (there may be more than one) -- any suggestions?
