Opportunities for women to be bosses were limited in those days
But remember that at that particular moment the war came along, and that presented much greater opportunities for a determined young woman.
I suspect that Nancy would have made her way through one of the service organisations and might have done well. Or she might have driven an ambulance and had a good, noisy time. After the war it might have been another story.
Of course she might also have started a family, and that in itself could have been a shattering experience.
Too much second guessing makes my brain ache. Beckfoot plumbing is somehow simpler.
