'Vicky' in Swallows and Amazons was changed to 'Bridget' in Swallowdale because the Altounyans did not like the name 'Vicky'. In a letter to AR on 20 July 1930, Ernest Altounyan asked "Why Vicky - a detestable name?" . . . "what [Brigit] will say when she finds out that she has been labelled as Vicky I shudder to think." So in Swallowdale, published the following year, Vicky became Bridget (rather than Brigit - possibly a mistake by AR).
I found this info in The Best of Childhood, a book which has been mentioned before - in fact it contains the answers to many of the queries which appear on TarBoard. Why on earth more AR-lovers don't buy it and read it, I simply do not understand.
