The disease was first identified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1981 and its cause identified by American and French scientists in the late 1980s.
It may not have been identified until the 1980s but it had been known about for some time. People don't only die from a disease after it has been identified.
Perhaps I should have said 'Many years later diagnosed as AIDS.'
