A lot of BBC (and ITV) series from the sixties and seventies (1967 to 1978) have missing episodes, including Dad’s Army, Dr Who, The Goon Show, Hancock’s Half Hour and Till Death Do Us Part.

They were on expensive quad tape, and the unions sought to limit repeats. Overseas sales were often on film (which were preserved by the BBC Film Library), but the potential of some of these series was not always realised. From McCann’s book on Dad’s Army, it was a job to get the first series of six episodes produced. The initial episode of Fawlty Towers did not get particularly good reviews, but all the (12) episodes are available!
