Children don't have control over much of their life: parents decide what sort of house they live in, the design of the common rooms of that house, and often even the bed they cozy up in at night. Children also tend to like anything in miniature--like "their-size" versions of what is around them. So, to a child if the ceiling in their room, for example, is quite high up, it is natural to look for and/or create a lower ceiling. This follows to size of bed, couches, chairs, and rooms. There is the coziness and comfort of a space that exactly fits you. And if you created the space for yourself or added your own bits and pieces, the pride of having made it all by yourself.

One of my earliest memories is of sitting curled up just to the right size to fit into one of the squares of sunlight that fell onto our kitchen floor through the windowpanes. What I remember most is that I exactly fit that square, and it was all mine.
