Ed, the perhaps surprising answer to your question is:
John doubles Mother
Susan doubles Father
Titty doubles the Pilot
Roger doubles Jim Brading
The company whose production this is, Eastern Angles, are a local institution, whose trademarks are ingenious, but always simple, staging, minimalist costume changes, a very small number of players (I've seen them use three) and new plays, written for them, always with a focus on East Anglian themes, with which they tour, giving performances in village halls and in tents, never in purpose built theatres.
I saw it tonight, in the company of several eminent Ransomians, who can no doubt comment further.
I thought it worked well; so did my 13 year old and 6 year old sons, both of whom know the book.
