the term 'British English' is not one I have come across before in computing or linguistics.

I've heard and used the phrase 'British English' hundreds of times throughout my life. I'm utterly astonished to find that some people find it unfamiliar. For example, I've often read, heard, or taken part in, discussions of the differences in spelling, vocabulary and idiom between the UK and the USA, and in all such discussions 'British English' was the accepted term for the way things are spoken or written in the UK.

I've always lived in the UK and like you I worked for many years in computing, but this is not particularly connected with computers, except for the fact that computers bring spell-checkers and grammar-checkers.
