You made a few good points there, Adam. Now I put my mind to it I can think of a few other Canadianisms - that is, I have heard them only in Canada. They may be current in the States too. Older people sometimes serve a lunch in the evening where we would call it a light supper. Supper is what we call dinner. "Batching" refers to a man living alone while his wife is away. "Skookum" is a Chinook Indian word meaning big or strong. AS to the upward inflection and the use of "eh!" people other than Canadian may use it, but Canadians are known for it, particularly in the States where it is a source of endless merriment. While I'm on the subject, there is a strange tendency for Americans to put a long "a" in a word they consider foreign where we would use a short one. Examples: Vietnahm instead of Vietnam. Hahmburg instead of Hamburg. For some reason, the long "a" is sounded like the "o" in clock. So you get Vietnom or Homburg. Anyone else notice this? Another one is the pronunciation of Parmesan. I always say parmesan, but Americans say parmezhon. Why? And what about "erbs" for herbs? Where did these variations come from?
