Behind the Colonel and in front of a man with a bowler hat (maybe the doctor?) are Peggy (left) and Nancy (only head visible) with hair-ribbons and long white dresses.

Yes. No wide brimmed hats. The hair bands must have been a retro fashion at the time. The GA is wearing one too.

As you say, it's a lovely detailed, crowded drawing. It feels as though AR enjoyed himself getting all the characters in. And they're drawn in unusual detail, for him.

For instance, just behind and to the right of the GA, there's a specially tall chap whose face has been given quite a bit of detail. Who he, I wonder? I'm sure AR must have had somebody in mind, although I don't see any clues in the book. And to the left of Nancy and Peggy (and the doctor, who I agree might well be the man in the bowler although bowlers were quite common in those days) there's a small chap with a child looking round from behind him; Jackie? He was there 'They won't be dragging lake for her then'...

And the military looking chap in the middle left background... Could be Sammy, but the cap looks like army, not police. I simply don't know enough about how the rural police dressed in those days. Looking at pictures from Exeter (I couldn't find anything from Windermere) it looks as though at the time they wore pointy hats.

Oh I say, what fun. Almost as fascinating as the plumbing.

Bother, I linked to a page, not an image. Here it is again.

And again. One day, I'll get this right....

Sorreeeeeeeeee.
