You suggested trying:

Suggest trying this also...
"There's a moose loose about the house."
and see if both lines sound the same. If they are sounding alike, that's Virginia.
But when it comes to accents, it is such a delight to run into one of Ransome's attempts to convey the sounds with careful spelling, such as the classic example of accent:
"Girt auld hen 'at wants to be cock o' t' midden." PM CH6 (Cook)
