I'll follow this thread with interest. I think it was a splendid tune. It has stuck inside my head for years. It was the tune for hoisting the Jolly Roger and running out the great guns whereas the Nat Cohen movie theme was gentler - a nice rolling tune for running downwind. I can hum the first half dozen bars of the television series theme but, having only got to Preliminary Grade in piano, am no use in describing the tune, modal or not! It does recall the music of Vaughn Williams but in the sense of folk tunes he used eg Sixteen Come Sunday (?17).
