We do love to speculate as to what will happen to our fictional friends when they "grow up." Such wonderings emphasize for us all just how "real" they were made for us to enjoy, to be our friends, to include us in their adventures.

On the romantic topic however, my own concept is that if a pair of these were to become and Item, it would be John and PEGGY, not Nancy. John wanted to be "commodore" of the fleet, and Nancy surrendered that title, but not the true command, to him. She was seeming to be the dominant one, always wanting to "stir things up." She was competition for John. I don't see him looking for a lifetime companion that would be in charge. He would want to be the Captain of his ship. But as for Peggy, she is the submissive one, used to taking orders from her older sister, and would quite easily shift that to John, when they got beyond their childhood years. Peggy is the one that challenges one's imagination for the future, as it is hard to see her away from Nancy. Just who she really will be when not in Nancy's shadow, we will never know, but I'm sure John will be a big part of that future for her.

But then, what do I know. It is fiction...

That last day, before John was to report to his ship, he was at Beckfoot. Peggy and he took a walk up the river road, and finally, as if they were drawn to it, found themselves at the old "Half-way Camp." There they turned to look back over the countryside, to remind themselves of the many good times they had had in so many places that lay there before them. They stood quietly, each in their own thoughtful memories - and holding each other closely, kissed. She laid her head on his shoulder, and with tears choking her voice, said, "But what if this is all we will ever have?"
