My problem is that they don't seem to have aged enough. If we accept the 'early summer nesting' thesis then GN has to take place a year after PM which would make John and Nancy 16 or 17. Just plausible I suppose but they seem more like 14 or 15 to me but times change.
For what it is worth, I suspect AR intended GN to be not a PD, he assembles quite few familar plot ingredients in this story but I don't think he ever quite worked out how he was going to handle the children growing up.
It would be interesting to learn how others view AR's treatment of not only this theme but the whole business of writing a series.
