Most children in the UK of a certain age will have begun their reading careers on something by Enid Blyton, from Noddy (Ed - have you not seen the various animated series on US TV?)to the Famous Five and the Adventure novels (well, compared AR not quite novels!) I can still recall my sense of satisfaction when I read an entire Famous Five book on a long car journey, and like you John once I discovered AR (and others) I didn't read anymore.
Yes, by our standards she could be racist and sexist but she had a writing style that worked for lots of children just discovering books.
What is interesting is that despite the library bans in the 70s and 80s in the UK her books have always been in print and there is currently a revival, with new stories about the Famous Five and the Faraway Tree - two of her most popular series after Noddy.
