I wonder if it was originally a copyright issue - that is, you wouldn't want to give a "more usable" plan away that could be used for personal gain in the first editions of the book?
But for my recent edition I had thought it was just a layout issue. Perhaps not enough room for two images amongst the wealth of additional text on Slug, Kittiwake and Racundra's later life?
