As someone who was lucky enough to spend 2 summers in the mid eighties teaching sailing on Ullswater I can state that it certainly rained a lot more than it was sunny, in fact the first year the lake level was higher at the end of summer than the beginning!
I believe the total number of sunny days was less than 10 over an 8 week period.
As an aside it was always surprising how many of the students, especially families, were trying sailing because they had read Swallows and Amazons.
