J.K. Rowling's books far more than Ransome's or others are built one upon the others. For example, there are hints in the second book which don't get resolved to the last one and this pattern is repeated throughout. So I would always urge that they be treated as one long story broken into increasingly large chapters rather than seven separate stories unlike Ransome's where you could read the books more or less in any order, though you wouldn't read the different chapters in a random order and expect to make much sense on a first reading.

I can understand why Peter C found Rowling less than interesting if he hasn't read them in order. It would be like the friend of mine who had never read The Lord of the Rings who, for some unknown reason, decided to go to the second of the films. He didn't understand what was going on and was completely bored as he was unengaged with the characters and the plot.
