It certainly is. In fact, in a newsgroup far, far away (uk.comp.sys.mac) for several years I and others have been making the point that it shouldn't be called 'talk like a pirate day' but rather 'talk like Robert Newton day'. Of course, realistic it ain't.

These Mac users are very keen on 'talk like a pirate day', and also on 'Mornington Crescent'. Not *all* the time, but every now and again we burst into song...

I think that the point about Newton's Long John Silver interpretation is that he camped it up outrageously; as opposed to anybody else's his version was totally memorable. Nothing since has come close...
