Or the Earthworm Tractor salesman (whose name I had to Google) Alexander Botts . . .
I can still remember the Saturday Evening Post illustration of one of the Earthworm stories, in which for some now forgotten reason Botts had fixed a couple of surplus JATO rockets to a caterpillar tractor. Micro-snagette being that one of them was fixed on backwards. Huge catherine wheel effect in the middle of a big, muddy field, in the rain. It's all I can remember. That, and that all the characters were old, venal and ugly. They were great stories. I wasn't even ten years old when I read them and even now that's part of my image of Seattle and the Sound.
