Tastes do differ, don't they!

I used to be a Hornblower fan, but now after a twenty plus years of reading O'Brian I find the Forester books almost unreadable. Hornblower's gloomy introspective one-note character always doubting himself is a major part of why I have lost my liking for those books.

Aubrey and Maturin are, in my opinion, both more rounded and seem to be more realistic characters. Aubrey is usually seen from other people's point of view and Maturin much more from within himself. They both grow and develop over the years and in each succeeding book.
