Having spent several years on Usenet, I'd say that by comparison this was a deeply, deeply civilised place.

Any forum in which the participants can't see each other will have its rough edges, but Tarboard is not a home of unpleasantness. Quite the contrary.

The aviation world once had a brilliant writer and cartoonist called Chris Wren, who was published in 'Aeroplane'. When Bristol and Sud-Aviation were collaborating on the design of 'Concorde', in Filton and Toulouse. They innovated in having ever-open electronic communications; telex and telephone lines; office could talk instantly to office. It was a wonder at the time. But Wren quoted one of the design team as saying 'The longer it is since you actually met your opposite number, the sillier he becomes.'

Spotting the anachronisms in that story is left as an exercise for the reader...
