I think Cartmel may be little large for Bigland. don't forget it is also famous for it's racecourse. Any town with a racecourse will have many pubs. I think there are a least 5 there.
I would opt for somewhere nearer and smaller, possibly Lowick Bridge which has frquent hound trials even today. Based to the south of Coniston, this would perhaps tie in with going over the fells from the western side of Windermere.
An alternative might be Newby Bridge where it is claimed AR was a frequent visitor to the hotel , but this may have been after the completion of the SA series and could afford it.
