The evil aunt was certaimly a common theme in the writings of these and earlier authors. (Kipling, Saki, etc) One idea I've heard is that this is due to children being sent home from the colonies in order to be educated. Since the parents were in India or wherever, the relatives were stuck with these children and vice versa.
