In the second mentioned drawing, there are visible only two of the chimneys, as the third near the front of the main house is out of the limits of the picture and so is not shown. But the two visible ones are not in the same place they were in the first drawing.

I've always been fascinated by AR's little inconsistencies. Although I lack the key to unlock them.

what was the common mode of heating such a two story house back in the 30's, and would the fuel used be coal or wood.

Anyway back to the subject in hand. Most rooms in Beckfoot would have contained a coal burning grate in a fireplace. The upstairs rooms would have had relatively simple small fireplaces. Those in the dining room, sitting room, and study would have been larger and/or more elaborate. A single chimney in the roof could gather many different chimney flues and chimney flues were not necessarily vertical but could run at an angle.

may TarBoard live on...
