When we first emigrated to Australia in 1952, my mother could not get used to the Australian approach of leaving washing out in the rain. The soot-laden rain that she was used to would have ensured that the washing would have had to be re-washed. I clearly remember a black line at the extremity of the windscreen wiper arc in our little car, which was, of course, soot. I understand that domestic coal fires were since prohibited.
