I think that AR was ignoring the tough realities and indulging in a little escapism. This, I understand, [I wasn't there at the time] was common. There were many fluffy musical comedy movies and stage shows written and produced at that time to give people [those who could afford to go to them] a little relief from the tedium and misery of real life. He was also,I am sure, shrewd enough to know that an economic depression, however severe, would not last for ever, and that it was best to not to tie the stories to that very sad event. That would harm their sales during better times.
