I can't see Captain Flint knuckling down to the discipline of the RN, although he might have served in the Merchant Navy. Perhaps his ship went to Russia and he stayed on there observing the revolution, and fell for one of Trotsky's secretaries, but was unable to help her escape from Russia, and remained a bachelor for the rest of his life as a result. Perhaps Bob Blackett was there with him, and both Bob and Jim's lady love perished in the attempt to flee the country.....?

NB - has Tarboard ever discussed Jim Turner's unmarried state ? After all, post-Great War there were plenty of surplus ladies about in England looking for husbands, and he was pretty good with children.
