A number of railway lines, both Standard and narrow gauge closed in the 1930's. I don't think this was the result of the depression but more the convenience of the motor vehicle taking their trafic away.
The classic story was when the Lynton & Barnataple was being put up for closure, all the protesters came by motor car! Nuff sed.
