In MISSEE LEE, that damn monkey sticks the cigar into the filling hole. I don't remember if the fuel was diesel or gas/petrol. But, I do doubt if that would have started a fire/explosion. One needs an open flame and oxygen, both of which would have been absent.

I'm from the southern Alberta ranch/farm country. Every shop/garage had an old oil pan on the floor, half filled with gasoline and a couple of old paint brushes. This was used to clean grease et cetera from such things as tractor parts. It was very common for smokers - and there were lots of them - to toss their butts into the pan, just to hear the sizzle. I never did see, or hear, of a fire starting.
