I recall carrying my wristwatch in a pocket for any number of reasons, one of them being that the strap had broken or that I would be risking damaging it by wearing it on my wrist. I have never owned a pocket watch.

Wristwatches were generally cheaper than pocket watches as well as being found to be more practical during World War 1, so I personally suspect John's first watch would have been a cheap wristwatch.

However, for the purpose of keeping a six year old happy, I suspect a pocket watch would be more impressive.
