Hmm. Difficult one that. Of course, water clocks or clepsydras were among the earliest time
keepers that were independent of the movement of the celestial bodies. Like early baths which
lacked plumbing they required topping up with water by hand.
More sophisticated water clocks were plumbed in and, like Dick's pigeon detector, rang bells.
Confusingly a sand clock is called a klepsydra in Polish.
