As a matter of interest, has anybody seen any real person (as opposed to a professional fogey) use one of those in the past few decades?

I presume you mean "use a pocket watch" - I was one of those unfortunates on whom wrist watches tended to turn green after a few months if they had metal cases, and even if plastic tended to stop after a few months. In the 70s and 80s I turned to pocket watches, which since they weren't in constant contact with my skin, were more or less immune to that malady (but not to being dropped, banged into things, etc., and I hated dangly gold chains).

Ultimate the lack of availability of inexpensive and small pocket watches (and there never were any digital ones that I came across) made me give up owning them, and I simply went without a watch for years. Now of course I tend to check my mobile phone instead.
