Absolutely, I couldn't have expressed this better myself, so I won't try to! Mind you, I would never allow
the use of such expressions from a crew actually sitting inside a boat.

Returning to allym's original question, the rower sitting on the bow thwart is supposed to take their timing
from the rower sitting on the mid thwart. You watch the back of the rower to maintain synchronisation. With an
experienced crew it becomes very easy to do and the progress of a rowing boat, where the crew keep in time and
feather their oars, is a joy to behold.

An inexperienced rower is apt to change timing suddenly. If you are rowing forward of them, unless you are
watching very carefully, you can very easily end up hitting them in the back.
