My suggestion is that the picture depicts the actual moment of capsize when the mast gets broken and the sledge is in the process of flipping over, Dick is head down in a snow drift (wearing shorts!) and Dorothea is sprawling as she falls off the sledge.
The cargo was lashed down under a sheepskin so that most of it didn't get lost in the accident.
