The staff member was right. Tipis (or teepees, as we spell it in the Lower 48,) were/are made of hides/canvas stretched over a cone-shaped framework of poles. They're quick and easy to set up and tear down, and well-suited for the nomadic life of the Plains Indians. Wigwams, built as you have described above, were used by the eastern or Woodlands tribes, who did not move around as much. In the desert southwest, a similar structure was called a hogan.
