Here is a snippet from Wikipedia which may be of slight interest - an actual Naval officer who served with the Yangtse flotilla and travelled from Britain to take up his post via the Trans-Siberian railway, as Commander Walker would have had to have done in the other direction to account for his itinerary in WDMTGTS.
I am certainly not suggesting that Commander Walker is in any way based on Captain Litchfield, but I think it is possible that AR might have recalled the newspaper report concerning Litchfield's arrest by the OGPU for taking a photograph of the Kremlin, which might have suggested the possibility of Commander Walker returning from the Hong Kong destroyer flotilla by that route.
