Unfortunately Johnathan Cape have been rather naughty in allowing the condition of the plates to deteriorate and in our 2000 edition John's wrist can barely be made out at all.

Anyway, I solved the problem of a "chronometer" for a six year old at a local antique shop where I acquired a 1974 Smiths pocket watch, cheap enough to be given to a child and with a satisfyingly loud tick (interestingly, it beats 14,400 not 18,000 - just like my pair cased verge, which is 160 years older!)
