"Landing" to me doesn't imply it's right at the top of the stairs. "Landing" the way my northern grannies used it (as do we, as Londoners) merely means any corridor upstairs, rather than just at the top of the stairs.
As for the second floor, I don't remember any mention of it in any of the books. Surely it's only a 2 storey house?
