Amanda should really be replying to this post, but I couldn't resist plunging in before anyone else. A barrister is what an American trial lawyer is termed in the U.K., To appear in court, they have to wear "bands" which are two white strips of cloth fastened to a detachable collar. The bands, as far as I know, are not removable, but the collar is. It's joined to the shirt with a collar stud. Both men and women barristers wear them. They are worn in Canada, but wigs have gone the way of the dodo. It looks a little strange to my eyes to see barristers pleading in court with bands but no wig. But that's because Rumpole is one of my heroes, and, he, being English, always wore a wig in court. Next question - who is Rumpole?? Amanda, please correct me in my sartorial description if I'm wrong.
